about

IV is the first studio release from fresh-faced Canterbury-based psychedelic/doom metal band Archdruid, written and recorded simultaneously. Archdruid’s modus operandi is total improvisation, one that is ‘underutilised in modern music’ according to the band.

‘The present is all that matters. We seek to capture that essence – the realisation that this current moment is all that exists. So, as far as we are concerned, it has to be spontaneous. The music has to reflect complete immersion in the present moment. It has, necessarily, to be improvised or by default sacrifice its authenticity; or whatever authority it manifests.’

The result is a single epic track, recorded in a single take. A 53-minute long instrumental opus, progressive and emotive in equal measure, marrying meditative, obnoxious, feedback-laced droning and washy, trance-inducing walls of sound. On IV, claims percussionist Callum Whiting, the band channels the ‘crushingly rhythmic vibes’ and ‘jazzy doom feelings’ of bands like Isis and Om, while paying homage to classic psychedelic bands of decades bygone and primal, detuned riff machines alike.

Archdruid England, UK

A progressive, ethereal, monolithic improv two-piece, scurrying frantically from the endless, vacant fissures of rural England, Canterbury’s Archdruid pairs the elative catharsis of hypnotic, meditative low-end riffing with the electricity of a fully improvised experience; the smell of torrid tube amps; the taste of a humid air damp with sweat; the sounds of unrelenting cacophony. ... more
